Mtskheta holds great importance to Georgia, being home to significant medieval monuments of Georgian christianity, such as the Samtavro Church (Place of the Ruler), Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (from the 11th century) and Jvari Monastery (6th century). Together, they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: \"Historical Monuments of Mtskheta\".

It is is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and was the site of Georgia's adoption of Christianity in 334. Today, it is the headquarters of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Mtskheta is a breathtaking ancient city, not to be missed when you are in Georgia, particularly, if you're interested in Georgian history.

To get to Mtskheta (20km from Georgia's capital, Tbilisi), you can take the marshrutka from Didube Bus Station, where there is a lively market and the stall owners are friendly and welcoming. It makes an interesting stop to see Georgian daily life.
