ბეთლემი (Betlemi, - Bethlehem) were founded in 1987 in Keda (Adjara province), a little city in the mountains highland of the south-west of Georgia, near Batumi. its members Temur, Jumber, and, later, Malkhaz from Batumi, started in 1978 in a pop-rock band, „ნაკადული“ (Stream). after a tour in 78, Jumber moved to the University of Batumi. in 1979 he found a rehearsal room with instruments, so, a new band was born, კარაველა (Karavela : Temur - lead guitar, Malkhaz - keys, Jumber - bass/vocals, Avto Kakabadze - rhythm guitar/vocals, Lado Moistsrapishvili - drums), active from 1979 to '81. in 1982 Malkhaz and Temur created a new band with the drummer Guram Kobuladze, but again the band was inactive from 1982 to 87 for problems, no money, equipment.. in '87 Beglar Mikeladze joined to the band as 2nd keyboardist. Guram convinced the director of Keda Cultural House and the secretary of the Communist Party of Keda's district administration, curator of the ideological field that there's the need of a true rock band project, and to help them, so, in October 1987 the new band was : Guram - drums, manager, Jumber - bass, author of lyrics, Malkhaz - keys, Temur - guitar/lead vox. the band was helped with some money by the local government, and assisted by the leader of the veteran rock band Bermukha, recognized as the \"father of Georgian rock\". Jumber had the idea to play a sort of hard rock with georgian traditional folk and prog rock. he choose the band name Betlemi, inspired after reading on a newspaper of some school excursions to the Betlemi Mountain in Georgia. after an audition, enters a true vocalist, Nugzar Guchmanidze. in 1989 the band wins as Best Band the \"We are looking for talents\" West Georgia contest, in Batumi. in 1992 is ready their 1st release : the official album \"ხავსმოდებული ზარების ექო\" (Khavsmodebuli Zarebis Eqo / Echo Of The Moss-Grown Bells), recorded in Moscow in 1992, and released then in '93. then, all the band moved to Batumi. Start problems, no money \u0026 instruments, no concerts.. in 97 the band was registered for the Adjara television, and, in 1998, Jumber flies to Germany with some representatives of Adjara TV, obtaining new instruments and equipment. in September 98 Nugzar Partenadze was invited to join from Turkey as new drummer. the style became much more symphonic progressive metal, the band works on a new composition called \"ლაშარის ასული“ (Daughter of Lashar), were added new instruments, Georgian Doli (Nugzar Partenadze) and Asian Accordion (Beglar Mikeladze). Nugzar the vocalist added another guitar. After a year of intensive work, in August 99 Betlemi was invited to Latvia's new, higher-level international rock festival Liepājas dzintars (Liepaya), the same festival that in 1991 was won by Mtsiri, georgian heavymetal. a producer invited them to Sweden, but due to the delay of the procedures for issuing visas to the Swedish consulate in Istanbul the trip was canceled. so, they decided to trial an european way in Germany : recording a demo, promoting, finding a European manager/producer. the result is a demo CD with 3 new songs (their 2nd and last release) : Abel and Cain, Gonio Castle and Crossroads, recorded in one day in Real Sound Studio in Gelsenkirchen, 1999-2000. the dream of a tour in Scandinavia and Japan, promoted by the german tour manager, failed because of lack of money, so unfortunately Betlemi returned to Georgia, and the no help by the Adjara government was the end . the band still exists here and there, with many line-up changes, until nowadays with the only Temur from the old line-up.
