This is the oldest protected area in Georgia, in the very northeast of the country bordering Azerbaijan and Dagestan on the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains. We met an amazing dog at the entrance, who we named Maggie, and she hiked with us for the entire 3 days. I was so sad to say goodbye to her at the end. This is her hang out place, and she accompanies hikers regularly, so say hi from us if you meet her! Our trek starts at the visitor centre in Lagodekhi, climbing through beautiful forest to Meteo Shelter for the first night. On day 2 we hike above the treeline, with fantastic views over the Kakheti lowlands to the south and the mountains of Azerbaijan and Dagestan to the north and east. After Black Rock Lake we descend to Demidovi Shelter for our second night in the mountain huts. On day 3 we descend over 2100 metres to the visitor centre, completing our loop.
