The August 2008 War between Georgia and Russia was a single most significant cause of displacement in Georgia in the 21st century. This war was an act of aggression, and resulted in the occupation of 127Georgian villages. It also claimed hundreds of civilian lives, and turned over 25,000 individuals into the displaced. The 5-day War obliterated entire villages, whereby deliberate destruction and burning of homes was used as tool of ethnic cleansing. Satellite images below tell the story of a concerted effort to prevent the return of the civilian Georgian population to their homes. These satellite photos are taken before and after the 2008 August War.
