Tbilisi St. Nicholas Church on Narikala was originally built in the XIII century, during the reign of St. King Demeter.
After the unification of Georgia with Russia, Narikala lost its former significance and the temple became a warehouse for gunpowder. A powerful explosion from a gunpowder warehouse destroyed the church almost to the ground.
In April 1996, the construction of a new church of St. Nicholas on the old foundation of the Tbilisi Fortress began.
