Tbilisi (Georgia) and Bristol (UK) were twinned in 1988 when Georgia was still part of the Soviet Union. It was very difficult time for Georgia. In April 1989, when twenty one people were ruthlessly killed in a peaceful demonstration in Tbilisi by the Soviet Army, and as a result of it, the communists’ regime was totally disgraced. Georgia started its way to independence from the Soviet Union. On 9 April 1991, shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Supreme Council of Georgia declared independence after a referendum held on 31 March 1991.

The exhibition on the second floor of the Museum of History of Tbilisi showed a wide range of projects which have taken place between Bristol and Tbilisi between 1988 and 2018 years. Bristol Tbilisi Association (BTA) acted and acts as a key promoter of the twinning link and encourages diverse initiatives between the two cities in various fields of public life. A big part of these initiatives were Georgian and British artists’ residencies in Tbilisi or Bristol and art shows.
