Nagorno-Karabakh is a landlocked region in the South Caucasus, located between Lower Karabakh and Zangezur and covering the southeastern range of the Lesser Caucasus mountains. The region is mainly mountainous and forest. Stepanakert is the center of Artsakh’s economy. Before the Nagorno-Karabakh war, Amaras was founded in the 4th century by the legendary Gregory the Illuminator.
AMARAS - Armenian monastery in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
Amaras Monastery is an early medieval monastery in the south-eastern part of Nagorno-Karabakh. The well-known religious and cultural center of medieval Armenia (the Mus Aband province of historical Artsakh). Amaras was subordinate to the Armenian Apostolic Church. According to the administrative-territorial division of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which actually controls the monastery, is located in the Martuni district of Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the evidence of the Armenian historian of the 5th century, Favstos Buzand, the church of the monastery of Amaras was founded at the beginning of the 4th century by St. Gregory the Illuminator. Amaras achieved the greatest fame in the middle of the 4th century, after the grandson of St. Gregory the Illuminator, the first bishop of Albania Caucasian Grigoris. Grigoris died in South Dagestan, according to some in 337, according to others - in 348 and was buried on the east side of the church. According to Buzand,
Then, the people who arrived with him from Khaband Gavar, took his body and transported Khaband, located in the Albanian country, on the border of Armenia, to his village, Amaras.
At the beginning of the 5th century, the creator of the Armenian alphabet of St. Mesrop Mashtots founded the first Armenian school in Amaras, hence the spread in the field of Armenian writing. In 489, already after the agreement between Persia and Byzantium, these lands were alienated from Armenia, the king of Albania, Vachagan III, the pious from the local branch of the Parthian dynasty, Arshakids (according to another version, from the Armenian family of Aranshahikov) finds the already forgotten grave of sv. Grigoris, builds a chapel over her and restores the church. This chapel is preserved to this day almost unchanged under the altar of the church of the monastery of Amaras. However, at the end of the 5th century, the tomb of Grigoris was located next to the church. Subsequently, in the process of numerous reorganizations, a church was erected directly above the chapel-tomb.
In 1848, during the Gandzasar Metropolitan Ter-Baghdasar, Amaras was returned to the Armenian Church. Unlike the church itself, the defensive walls of the monastery and civilian buildings survived without significant damage. In 1858, a new monastery church was built on the site of the old, damaged one at the expense of the Shushi Armenians.
In 1931, there were 112 Armenian churches and 18 monasteries in Nagorno-Karabakh. For 6 months, they were all closed by the authorities.
So Amaras, being one of the temples to be opened, was attacked by the Azerbaijani forces only 2 days after opening its doors to the parishioners.
In May 1991, was severely damaged by the Azerbaijani forces. The temple was twice attacked by the military. According to local residents, the temple was plundered by Azerbaijani riot police and residents of a neighboring Azerbaijani village. As a result, church supplies and donations of parishioners were stolen.
In 1992, when Amaras was occupied by Azerbaijani troops during the Karabakh war, the tomb of his grandson Gregory the Illuminator, St. Grigoris, was destroyed.
