ქართველების განსაკუთრებულ საგანძურად ტრადიციული მუსიკა არის მიჩნეული. 2001 წელს, ქართული მრავალხმიანობა იუნესკომ კაცობრიობის არამატერიალური მემკვიდრეობის შედევრად აღიარა. თბილისის კონსერვატორიაში დაცული უძველესი ქართული ფოლკლორული ჩანაწერების გაციფრულება მხოლოდ მას შემდეგ მოხერხდა, რაც ამერიკის ელჩის პირადი გადაწყვეტილებით და ვაშინგტონის სმითსონის ინსტიტუტის ჩართულობით, თანამედროვე აპარატურა დამონტაჟდა. უძველესი ჩანაწერები განადგურებას გადაურჩა. Folk music is considered a special treasure by Georgians. In 2001, Georgian polyphony was added by UNESCO to their “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. Digitization of the ancient Georgian folklore recordings, preserved in the Tbilisi State Conservatoire was possible only after personal decision of the American ambassador and the involvement of the Washington Smithsonian Institution, when modern equipment was installed.
