Georgian choral music with the folk choir "Phazisi (ფაზისი)" (1999)
The choir "Phazisi (ფაზისი)" was founded in 1976 as a folk ensemble of the Georgian SSR Academy of Sciences (მეცნიერებათა აკადემია საქართველოს სსრ-ისა). It was lead by Robert Gogolashvili (რობერტ გოგოლაშვილი, *1939), succeeded in 1983 by Jumber Kolbaia (ჯუმბერ ყოლბაია, 1944-2017). Kolbaia had a still existing YouTube channel, on which some live recordings of the choir can be found. 1 --- ნანა (Nana): purportedly pre-Christian lullaby (anyway, a lullaby related to a pre-Christian kind of ritual) 0:00 2 --- ღმერთო, ღმერთო (Ghmerto, Ghmerto: God, God): 19th-century liturgical chant 2:37 3 --- საშობაო მრავალჟამიერი (Sashobao mravalzhamieri): 14th-century Christmas Polychronion (liturgical chant) 5:28 4 --- განეგო სასძლო (Ganego sasdzlo: Open the gates for the bride): 18th-century liturgical chant 7:33 5 --- ჟამთა და წელთა (Zhamta da tselta: Ages and years): liturgical chant from the 10th-century collection of Miqael Modrekili (Movedit taqvani vstset: Let us pray to the Lord): 14-15th-century liturgical chant 18:42 10 --- რომელნი ქერუბიმთა (Romelni qerubimta: We who mystically represent the Cherubim): 10th-century Cherubikon (liturgical chant), as arranged by Zacharia Paliashvili (ზაქარია ფალიაშვილი) in his "ქართული ლიტურგია (Qartuli liturgia: Georgian Liturgy)" (1910) 21:07 11 --- შენ ხარ ვენახი (Shen khar venakhi: Thou art a vineyard): Medieval liturgical chant in praise of the Virgin Mary, Western variation 24:11 12 --- ალილო (Alilo): 19th-century Christmas carol 25:55 13 --- ღმერთი უფალი (Ghmerti uphali: God is our Lord): 10th-century liturgical chant in the 3rd mode, as arranged by Vasili Karbelashvili (ვასილი კარბელაშვილი) in his "ცისკარი (Tsiskari: Matins)" (1898) 29:01 14 --- შენ ხარ ვენახი (Shen khar venakhi: Thou art a vineyard): Medieval liturgical chant in praise of the Virgin Mary (used by Sergei Parajanov in his movie "The color of pomegranates", 19'-20') 31:24 15 --- მახა (Makha: Go): 19th-century song in front of the Icon (liturgical chant) 34:37 16 --- ნანინა (Nanina): 19th-century lullaby 37:03 17 --- ბატონებო (Batonebo): 14-15th century lullaby 40:26 18 --- მრავალჟამიერი (Mravalzhamieri): 20th-century toasting song 44:00 Phazisi (ფაზისი), conducted by Jumber Kolbaia (ჯუმბერ ყოლბაია) recorded in the Førde kyrkje i Sunnfjord (Norway), July 7-8, 1999 photo: Gergeti Trinity Church (გერგეტის სამების ეკლესია) in Georgia
